About this course

Who it is for

This course is for developers who already know basic SQL and want to use PostgreSQL well in real applications. If SELECT, JOIN and GROUP BY are new to you, take the Database and SQL course first. It is also useful if you have worked with MySQL or another database and want to learn what PostgreSQL does differently.

What it covers

It starts with setting up PostgreSQL and its data types, schemas, sequences and identity columns. The data modelling module covers JSON and JSONB, arrays and practical schema design. The query module covers index types, common table expressions, window functions and writing your own functions. The final module covers transactions, roles and permissions, reading EXPLAIN plans, performance basics and backup and restore.

How to use it

Every lesson includes examples, common mistakes, an exercise, a quiz and interview questions. Run the examples in your own PostgreSQL database, and use EXPLAIN on your own queries once you reach the performance lessons, because seeing a plan change is the fastest way to understand indexes.
